The Anambra State Government has officially received two 40-foot containers of medical equipment, which were donated by MedShare International in collaboration with The Coca-Cola Company.

This initiative, known as the Coca-Cola Safe Birth Initiative (SBI), is specifically designed to enhance maternal and neonatal healthcare services in Nigeria.

The equipment was officially received by the Anambra State Hospital Administrator, Dr Frank Ifeanaeme, who described the donation as a major boost to healthcare delivery in the state.

According to health officials, the intervention followed a needs assessment conducted in Anambra State to identify critical shortages in medical equipment and supplies required to improve hospital services and reduce maternal and child mortality.

The Safe Birth Initiative is designed to strengthen public healthcare facilities through the provision of essential medical equipment, maintenance support, and technical capacity building for healthcare workers and biomedical professionals.

Speaking during the handover, Dr Ifeanaeme said the initiative would significantly enhance the capacity of hospitals to provide quality healthcare services for women and children across the state.

He noted that the programme also included intensive hands-on training for biomedical engineers and technicians drawn from state, mission, and private hospitals to ensure effective maintenance and long-term functionality of the equipment.

According to Ifeanaeme, MedShare’s Chief Biomedical Engineer recently concluded technical training sessions in the state focused on the repair and maintenance of medical devices.

“The training is a critical component of the Safe Birth Initiative because it will ensure maximum uptime of medical equipment, improve hospital operations and ultimately lead to better patient outcomes,” Ifeanaeme said.

He added that the training would equip participants with practical skills needed to maintain both newly donated and existing medical equipment, thereby strengthening healthcare delivery in the state.

The donated items include 438 pieces of medical equipment and supplies, such as baby incubators, infant warmers, oxygen concentrators, nebulisers, electric hospital beds with mattresses, medical-grade refrigerators, Ambu bags, wheelchairs, and X-ray Kodak screens.

Officials said installation of the equipment in designated health facilities across the state would begin in the coming weeks.

The Coca-Cola Safe Birth Initiative, supported by the Coca-Cola Foundation and implemented in collaboration with MedShare International, is part of efforts to improve access to quality maternal and neonatal healthcare in Nigeria while reducing the financial burden of healthcare procurement on public institutions.
