The Kaduna State Government has announced plans to recruit 10,000 teachers in a bid to address staffing shortages and improve the quality of education in public schools across the state.

The disclosure was made during the inauguration of a Teacher Professional Development Programme for 8,102 teachers drawn from the state’s 23 local government areas.

Governor Uba Sani, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Hadiza Balarabe, said the recruitment forms part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening the education sector through sustained investment in teachers and infrastructure.

He reiterated that education remains a top priority of his administration, emphasizing the critical role teachers play in enhancing students’ academic performance.

The governor further noted that the government has introduced several measures to improve teachers’ welfare. These include the implementation of the new minimum wage for primary school teachers, settlement of promotion arrears, and resolution of issues surrounding the Nigeria Union of Teachers Endwell Scheme.

According to him, the professional development programme is designed to enhance teaching methods, build capacity, and improve classroom delivery in public schools.

Earlier, the Executive Chairman of the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board, Mubarak Mohammed, described the initiative as a comprehensive reform effort rather than a routine training exercise.

He explained that the programme is structured to achieve lasting improvements in teaching quality and learning outcomes across the state.

Mohammed added that the planned recruitment of 10,000 teachers will complement the training programme, stressing that adequate manpower and capacity development must go hand in hand so as to drive meaningful progress.

He also noted that the training will focus on literacy, numeracy, science, and early childhood education, while promoting modern, learner-centered teaching approaches. “Strong monitoring and accountability measures have been put in place to ensure effective implementation,” he said.

Representatives of development partners, including Save the Children International, commended the initiative, describing it as a positive step toward improving education outcomes in Kaduna State.
