NiMet: Severe Thunderstorms to Sweep Across Several States
By Maryam Muhammad Oyiza, Abuja
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast that severe thunderstorms, accompanied by strong winds and moderate rainfall, are currently affecting parts of Borno, Adamawa, Plateau, and several states in Nigeria’s South-East, raising concerns over potential disruptions and safety risks.
According to the latest weather update, the storm system is expected to intensify and expand its reach within the next one to six hours, impacting additional states across the country.
States likely to be affected include Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, and Lagos.
The developing weather conditions could result in reduced visibility, localized flooding, and damage to unsecured property, particularly in areas prone to strong winds.
NiMet urged residents and stakeholders to take precautionary measures to minimize risks associated with the storms.
Motorists were advised to exercise caution while driving in rainy conditions due to slippery roads and poor visibility.
Farmers were cautioned against applying fertilizers or pesticides immediately before rainfall to prevent nutrient leaching and reduced effectiveness. Individuals were also encouraged to secure loose outdoor items to avoid damage or injury caused by strong winds.
NiMet also recommended disconnecting electrical appliances during the storms to prevent damage from potential power surges. Residents were further advised to avoid sheltering under tall trees, which may pose risks due to falling branches or uprooting.
Airline operators were specifically advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency for better operational planning and safety.
The public was encouraged to stay informed through official weather updates and advisories, including those available on the agency’s website, to ensure timely responses to changing weather conditions.
