President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned the newly completed right-hand service carriageway of the Inner Northern Expressway (INEX), linking Route 3 to the Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX), also known as Murtala Muhammed Way.
Represented by the deputy senate president Jibrin Barau, said the project aligns with his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
While speaking at event Monday in Abuja Tinubu described the infrastructure as a vital component of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Master Plan.
He noted that it would significantly ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and enhance urban mobility for millions of residents, commuters, and businesses in Abuja and surrounding areas.
The President commended the Minister of the FCT, Barr Nyesom Wike, for his vision and prompt delivery of the project. “You have contributed to something larger than a roadway,” Tinubu stated. “You have contributed to the future of our capital city. Your commitment to excellence and timely execution is deeply appreciated.”
The FCT Minister, Barr Nyesom Wike, thanked the President for his unwavering support and commitment to completing long abandoned projects.
He revealed that the INEX road was awarded in 2014 for ₦7 billion but rose to ₦31 billion due to inflation and years of delay. “This road took 11 years to finish. With monthly commitment, it could’ve been done in a year. That is why Mr. President’s intervention is commendable,” Wike said.
Wike also emphasized the road’s strategic location within Abuja’s industrial zone and disclosed that his administration had issued long delayed Certificates of Occupancy to investors within two weeks of assuming office. “That single act revived confidence and has the potential to create over 40,000 direct jobs. Mr. President, that is impact,” he added.
He appealed for federal approval of tax concessions to enable private developers complete the adjoining left hand carriageway and criticized bureaucratic delays that stalled approvals to cross the rail line. “We are losing opportunities when government hesitates. Infrastructure is the key driver of economic growth,” the minister stressed.
On her part, Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, echoed the President’s sentiments and described the commissioning as a testament to the administration’s resolve to deliver impactful and people centered governance.
She praised Minister Wike’s leadership and said the project is bound to transform the lives of thousands of daily road users.
Dr. Mahmoud added that the new carriageway symbolises collective progress and national unity in pursuit of a better Nigeria. “Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are determined to build a more connected and prosperous Nigeria,” she said. “This project is a shining example of what collaborative effort and focused leadership can accomplish”.
