When Silence Fails, Leadership Speaks

When Silence Fails, Leadership Speaks

By Umar Saba Baba

While some opposition voices in Niger State have rushed to misread Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s recent bluntness, history tells us to read it another way.

There comes a point in every leader’s journey when silence stops being prudence and becomes surrender. As *John Adams* warned: _“Facts are stubborn things... they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”_

The facts are these: In recent weeks, parts of Niger State have witnessed inter-communal tensions. Reports also point to the infiltration of religious extremists. Allegations persist that these flare-ups are being exploited by political gladiators — actors who either seek to profit from chaos or to discredit the government ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Democracy guarantees freedom of expression and association. But as *Mahatma Gandhi* reminded us: _“Rights that go wrong are the very opposite of right.”_ No freedom is absolute when it is used to undermine peace, unity, and the machinery of progressive governance.

This is not the first time Niger has faced such existential tests. Past administrations confronted similar crises, each with its own method. Some preferred conciliation. Others chose firmness. That divergence is not failure. It is proof that leadership has no single template.

Governor Bago has built his public image on candor. He speaks sternly, but directly, especially when the peace and cohesion of the state are under threat. He has been quiet for a while — perhaps too quiet. Yet when a leader is pushed to the wall, he must rise. Not with noise, but with clarity and conviction.

Let us be candid: Niger State is not easy to govern. Like Kaduna, it sits at the intersection of ethnicity, activities of vile elements and politics. Its leader must be both proactive and pragmatic. The state cannot afford to watch while opportunists attempt to drag it back to an era of retrogression for political gain.

So while some condemn the governor’s tough language toward detractors, betrayers, and opportunists, others understand the moment. Strong times demand strong words. Desperate times call for decisive measures. The government’s resolve is being tested. The man at the helm must not only act, he must neutralize present and emerging threats before they metastasize.

Democracy is not a license for anarchy. It is a covenant for order, development, and dignity.

Farmer Governor Bago’s bluntness is not hostility. It is a signal: Niger State will not be held hostage by those who profit from division.

If you cannot commend efforts aimed at moving the state to an enviable position, then the honorable path is to stand aside and watch. The unfolding pattern set by the leader-in-chief will in time inform whether one chooses to condemn or to commend — for the greater good of our dear Niger State.
