The Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, announced the results on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the Council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
Prof. Wushishi said 1,378,048 candidates registered for the examination, comprising 682,352 males and 695,696 females, while 1,371,992 candidates eventually sat for the examination.
He explained that 1,162,118 candidates, representing 84.70 per cent, obtained five credits and above, irrespective of their performance in English Language and Mathematics.
The Registrar said the 2026 SSCE Internal was conducted from June 15 to July 23 across the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory and six foreign countries.
The countries are Benin Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Niger Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo and Saudi Arabia.
According to him, the marking exercise took place nationwide from August 17 to September 4, with the results released 63 days after the conclusion of the examination.
Prof. Wushishi disclosed that 1,334 candidates with special needs participated in the examination.
He said they comprised 640 candidates with hearing impairment, 149 with visual impairment, 84 with albinism, 94 with autism, 136 with low vision and 231 candidates with adermatoglyphia.
On examination malpractice, the Registrar said 1,406 candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice in the 2026 examination, representing a 64.74 per cent reduction from the 3,878 cases recorded in 2025.
He described the 2026 examination cycle as one of the most challenging for the Council, saying it tested NECO’s systems, processes, preparedness and resolve.
The Registrar said the Council subjected the processes leading to the release of the results to planning, coordination, assessment, verification and quality assurance to safeguard the credibility of the examination.
He stressed that NECO remained committed to ensuring that certificates issued to candidates reflected their actual academic performance and were not obtained through impersonation, manipulation or other forms of examination malpractice.
Prof. Wushishi commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa'id Ahmad, and other stakeholders for their support to the Council.
He also appreciated the National Assembly committees overseeing education and examination bodies, security agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of State Services (DSS), as well as INEC, JAMB, SUBEBs and state Ministries of Education for providing logistical and other support during the examination.
The Registrar congratulated the candidates and urged them to pursue further education with renewed determination.
Meanwhile, NECO staff who participated in the Council’s sporting competitions were presented with medals as part of efforts to motivate staff and encourage teamwork within the organisation.
