PDP Convention: Ikpeazu calls for unity, renewal as party decides new leadership

The Chairman of the 2026 National Convention Planning and Organising Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has called on party members to embrace unity, inclusiveness and renewal as the party begins the process of electing a new National Working Committee (NWC).

Delivering his address at the party’s 10th Elective National Convention in Abuja, Ikpeazu described the gathering as historic and pivotal to the future of the PDP.

He recalled that the last national convention to elect members of the NWC was held in October 2021 at Eagle Square, Abuja, noting that the party has since experienced a challenging and, at times, turbulent period marked by internal leadership strains.

According to him, the situation led to the intervention of the National Executive Committee (NEC) at its 104th meeting in December 2025, where a National Caretaker Working Committee was constituted to stabilise the party.

“Today, however, we stand once again at the threshold of history,” he said, adding that the convention’s theme, Inclusiveness, Unity and Renewal, reflects both the current realities and the pathway to the party’s future.

Ikpeazu stressed that the theme goes beyond a slogan, describing it as a strategic imperative that calls for rebuilding trust and repositioning the PDP as a leading platform for democratic governance in Nigeria.

He said the convention represents a critical democratic process, as delegates are gathered to elect a new leadership that will steer the affairs of the party over the next four years.

“This moment is not merely procedural; it is profoundly democratic and historically symbolic. It represents renewal, rebirth, and a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to justice, equity, and national cohesion,” he stated.

The committee chairman commended party members across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for their resilience and loyalty, noting that their steadfast support has kept the PDP strong and relevant despite electoral setbacks.

Addressing members and supporters at home and in the diaspora, Ikpeazu maintained that the PDP remains Nigeria’s most experienced and nationally rooted political party, urging members to safeguard this legacy.

He expressed confidence that the convention would mark the beginning of a renewed effort to rebuild, rebrand and reposition the party for future electoral success.

Ikpeazu also acknowledged the contributions of key party leaders, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whom he described as a “formidable pillar” in sustaining the party over the years.

He further recognised the roles played by other leaders, including Senator Bukola Saraki, in promoting dialogue, reconciliation and stability within the party during difficult periods.

The chairman commended members of the convention planning committee and its subcommittees for their dedication and sacrifice in organising the event, despite time constraints.

He also welcomed electoral and diplomatic observers, noting that their presence underscores the party’s commitment to transparency and democratic integrity, while appreciating the media for their continued support.

Ikpeazu charged the incoming National Working Committee to priorities' reconciliation, rebuild trust, restore discipline and strengthen internal democracy within the party.

“The duty of genuine reconciliation within our party is not optional; it is fundamental. Your work begins immediately,” he said.

He emphasised that the convention is not merely ceremonial but a defining moment that will determine the PDP’s ability to overcome its challenges and reclaim its position as a leading political force in Nigeria.

Ikpeazu urged members to uphold the ideals of inclusiveness, unity and renewal beyond the convention, stressing that these principles must guide actions at all levels of the party.

“Together, we shall rebuild. Together, we shall reconcile. Together, we shall rise again,” he declared.

The PDP 2026 National Convention with the Theme : Convention of Inclusiveness, Unity and Renewal, is expected to produce a new National Working Committee to lead the party for the next four years.
