Security Key to Nigeria’s Trillion-Dollar Economy- Minister
By Ahmad Sirajo Makama
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has declared that sustainable national security, robust governance, and credible institutions serve as the non-negotiable foundation required to drive Nigeria’s transition into a trillion-dollar economy.
He made the declaration while delivering a keynote address titled “National Security: Pathway to a Trillion-Dollar Economy” at the 56th Annual Accountants’ Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
According to a statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, General Musa emphasised that national security must function as an economic catalyst that protects human capital, secures critical infrastructure, and provides the regulatory predictability necessary to attract long-term investment.
General Musa highlighted key strategic priorities under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, including the protection of strategic economic assets, enhancement of domestic defence industrial capacity, fortifying cybersecurity, and enforcing fiscal discipline within the defence sector.
To strengthen institutional synergy, the Minister announced the establishment of a Joint Ministry of Defence–ICAN Implementation Committee to drive collaborative initiatives between the military and financial sectors.
The joint committee will focus on specialised public financial management training for military personnel, joint programs in forensic accounting to combat terrorism financing, and improved governance frameworks for veterans' welfare schemes.
