The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide for the establishment of the State Police Service.

The bill was passed during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Ismail-Falgore, following deliberations on Clauses 1 to 26 at the Committee of the Whole House.

Announcing the passage, the Speaker said the lawmakers had considered the proposed constitutional amendment in line with the powers conferred on the Assembly under Section 9, Subsection 2 of the 1999 Constitution.

He said the bill, which seeks to provide a constitutional framework for the establishment of state police and related matters, had been duly considered and passed by the House.

The development marks a step in Kano State's legislative process towards the proposed establishment of a state police service, amid ongoing national discussions on decentralising policing and strengthening security across the country.

In a related development, the House also passed the 2026 Supplementary Appropriation Amendment Bill.

The amendment reduces Kano State's approved 2026 budget by approximately ₦276 billion, from ₦1.477 trillion to ₦1.211 trillion.

The revised budget is expected to guide the state's expenditure and implementation of government programmes for the remainder of the fiscal year.
