APC Picks Consensus Candidate for Ogun 2027 Race

The ruling All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria has on Monday night adopted Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola as its consensus candidate for the upcoming governorship race in 2027.

The decision was reached during a high-level strategic caucus meeting in Abeokuta, the state capital was aimed at consolidating its position ahead of the 2027 elections, by rallying political figures behind a single candidate, in order to avoid internal divisions and project unity.

The gathering brought together major stakeholders within the party, including the incumbent and the former governors in the state.

Other prominent figures in attendance included several serving and former National Assembly members, underscoring the weight of the endorsement and the party’s effort to present a united front.

The consensus emerged after consultations led by Governor Abiodun, who engaged other aspirants from the Ogun West Senatorial District, persuading them to step aside in the interest of cohesion. Among those reported to have stepped down their ambition were Gboyega Nasir Isiaka and Abiodun Akinlade.

In an acceptance speech, Senator Adeola struck a conciliatory and forward-looking tone, pledging loyalty to the party and continuity in governance.

He emphasized unity across political and regional spectrum, describing Ogun as central to Nigeria’s economic and industrial landscape.

Adeola committed himself to sustaining the state’s growth trajectory, often described as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing economies and a leading industrial hub.

“I will not let the party or the people down,” he said, promising to preserve stability, strengthen cooperation within the APC, and build on existing development efforts."

Senator Adeola further described his emergence as a collective achievement, crediting fellow party members for their sacrifices and support.

He pledged that his leadership would prioritize inclusiveness, continuity, and progress, positioning Ogun State for what he described as its “next level” of development.

The consensus decision marks an early but significant step in the lead-up to Nigeria’s 2027 election cycle, highlighting the APC’s strategy of internal alignment in key states.

Political figures at the event included the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, and three former governors: Olusegun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel, and Ibikunle Amosun.
