Kogi Parliamentary Staff Set to Boost Legislative Efficiency

Senior staff of the Kogi State House of Assembly have been charged to embrace teamwork and exemplary leadership in the discharge of their duties, following a capacity-building workshop organized by the Assembly Service Commission.

The training, which targeted senior parliamentary staff, was organized to equip participants with modern leadership skills, encourage teamwork and strengthen collaboration within the legislature. 

Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the event, the Chairman Kogi State House of Assembly Commission Andas Malik stressed that leadership without collaboration is bound to fail “any leader that cannot carry subordinates along will be a failure,” he said. “Staff are being trained on how to maintain their roles as leaders, how to engage in teamwork, and how to be successful in their assignments.”

He added that the Commission deemed it necessary to bring staff together to gain new knowledge that would reflect positively on the operations of the House.

On his part, Barr Alfred Bello officer in charge of training reminded participants that parliamentary staff are bound by a code of conduct that guides their professional behavior. He emphasized comportment, discipline, and strict adherence to established rules, noting that he expects visible change from staff after the training. “Knowing and following the rules is non-negotiable. We expect a higher standard of service delivery going forward,” he added.

An important highlight of the workshop was a lecture delivered by Prof. Abraham Musa on the topic, “Leading and Managing High-Performing Teams in the Parliament.” He outlined the distinct roles of members and staff within the legislature while underscoring the importance of leadership by example. He noted that high-performing parliamentary teams are built on trust, clear communication, shared goals, and mutual accountability.

“Leadership in parliament is not just about authority; it is about influence, integrity, and the ability to unify people around a common legislative agenda,” Prof Abraham urged senior staff to model the conduct they expect from their subordinates and to foster an environment where teamwork thrives.

The event was attended by members of the Kogi parliament, alongside notable invitees including the General Manager of the Hotel and Tourism Board, Prince Philip Orebiyi, and the Clerk of the House, Chogudo Ahmed, the deputy speaker Comfort Nwuchiola Egwaba.

The training concluded with a charge to all participants to translate the lessons learned into daily practice, with the Commission pledging to monitor impact and provide follow-up sessions
