PDP New NWC Holds Inaugural Meeting, Rules out Coalition Ahead of 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has emerged stronger and more united after months of internal disputes and legal battles that at some point threatened the stability of Nigeria’s main opposition platform.

Speaking at the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held at the party’s National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, the National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammed, said the party’s survival through the turbulent period reflects its institutional strength and democratic resilience.

The PDP had in recent months been embroiled in leadership tussles and court cases that created uncertainty within its ranks and raised concerns among members and political observers about its cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, addressing party leaders, the chairman said the difficult phase has now been overcome.

 “What we have witnessed in recent months is not merely a resolution of disputes, but the triumph of institutional resilience over uncertainty, and of collective conviction over division,” he said.

Alhaji Muhammed expressed appreciation to party members across the country for their loyalty and patience, noting that their commitment kept the party intact during its most challenging moments.

“We are profoundly grateful to millions of loyal party men and women whose steadfast faith and unwavering commitment sustained the PDP through a prolonged and testing period,” he added.

The chairman said the successful resolution of the crisis has repositioned the PDP as a formidable political force, ready to play its historic role in Nigeria’s democratic development. “Today, we can confidently affirm that the Peoples Democratic Party has emerged stronger, more united, and better positioned to play its historic role in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” he stated.

He also highlighted the party’s recent National Convention, describing it as a major turning point and a demonstration of internal democracy.

 “That convention was not just a procedural exercise; it was a powerful reaffirmation of our commitment to order, transparency, and constitutionalism,” Muhammed said.

According to him, the convention produced competent and disciplined national officers committed to repositioning the party and delivering effective leadership.

On the lingering leadership question that had generated controversy, the PDP chairman said the matter has now been conclusively settled, with formal recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

 “The Independent National Electoral Commission has duly recognized and uploaded the names of our National Officers on its official portal. This provides institutional clarity and reinforces the legitimacy of the current leadership,” he explained.

He stressed that the party has moved past uncertainty and is now firmly anchored on legality and order.

Addressing speculations in the political space, Alhaji Muhammed firmly ruled out any merger or coalition involving the PDP.

 “The Peoples Democratic Party is not engaged in any merger or coalition discussions with the African Democratic Congress or any other political party. We remain a strong, independent political platform,” he declared.

The chairman also condemned statements attributed to former minister Tanimu Turaki suggesting possible coalition talks, describing them as false and misleading.

 “Such assertions are not only inaccurate but represent a deliberate effort to misinform the public and undermine the integrity of our party,” he said.

He warned that the party would not hesitate to take legal action against any conduct capable of bringing it into disrepute or violating the rule of law.

The PDP chairman further commended security agencies for their role during the crisis, particularly in safeguarding party assets and restoring access to its national secretariat.

 “Their professionalism and timely intervention ensured that the legitimate leadership of the party can operate without hindrance,” he noted.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Alhaji Muhammed said the PDP is undergoing strategic repositioning and will present Nigerians with credible alternatives.

 “We are poised to unveil bold initiatives that will not only reposition the party but also offer Nigerians a compelling alternative in the years ahead,” he said.

He called on party members to remain united and intensify grassroots mobilization efforts nationwide.

 “The journey has not been easy, but it has been instructive. From adversity, we have drawn strength; from challenge, we have forged unity,” he added.

Reaffirming the party’s readiness for the future, the chairman declared:

 “The Peoples Democratic Party is back, stronger than ever, and ready to lead.”
