Akume Urges NALDA to Scale Up Farming Programmes

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has been urged to scale up its programmes and strengthen the use of technology to reach more states of the federation.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, made the call during the inauguration of the board members in Abuja, noting that NALDA has recorded commendable progress through key initiatives such as the Renewed Hope Mega Farm Estates, currently ongoing in several locations across the country.

“These estates are being developed as modern, mechanized agricultural hubs, integrating irrigation systems, processing infrastructure, and clustered settlements for farmers. The Renewed Hope Restoration Project, which is a smaller-scale version of the Mega Farm Estates, is targeted at persons of concern.

“Additionally, the Green Hope Project is advancing climate-smart greenhouse farming, ensuring year-round fruit and vegetable production, while the Aqua Hope Project focuses on expanding opportunities in aquaculture by introducing structured fish farming systems that enhance productivity and sustainability,” Akume said.

According to him, the initiatives are already contributing to increased food production, job creation, and rural development, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritizes food security, economic diversification, and inclusive growth.

He therefore enjoined the board members to approach their responsibilities with dedication and commitment to national development, adding that NALDA remains a critical driver of Nigeria’s agricultural growth and a key pillar of national development.

The Board Chairman, Kabir Barkiya, said the board would work in close collaboration with the management team to achieve its objective of translating policy direction into tangible outcomes that positively impact Nigerians.

“As a governing board, our mandate is clear: to provide strategic direction, ensure sound governance, and uphold transparency and accountability in the discharge of our duties.

“We will provide initiatives that unlock agricultural potential, promote inclusive participation, empower farmers across the nation, and drive sustainable growth,” Barkiya said.

Barkiya reaffirmed the board’s commitment to delivering measurable results that contribute meaningfully to food security in the country.
