Nana Shettima Urges Ethical Leadership, Justice at Conference
By Ahmad Sirajo Makama, Abuja
Nana Kashim Shettima, the wife of the Vice President of Nigeria, has called upon citizens to embrace leadership responsibilities and to act with justice in all their endeavours.
This appeal was made during the 19th Annual National Conference of Women in Da’wah, held in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State.
Mrs Shettima, represented by Abdulsalam Mohammed, her Special Assistant on Administration, highlighted the crucial role of women in national development. She underscored the urgent need for ethical leadership in this context.
Mrs Shettima reminded Muslim women that societal transformation commences within the home, describing women as Al-Madrasatul Ula (the first school).
She emphasised that the values of integrity and empathy imparted to children today will significantly influence the leaders of tomorrow.
Mrs Shettima stated that responsible leadership does not start in government offices but begins at home and in the heart of every mother, wife, and sister, citing the Prophet Muhammad’s teaching that a woman is a shepherd responsible for her household flock.
Additionally, she acknowledged the initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration aimed at restoring economic stability and national security through the Renewed Hope Agenda.
She also commended First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) for empowering women across the nation.
Mrs Shettima challenged the Women in Da’wah to help establish the moral and spiritual infrastructure necessary to address critical social vices such as drug abuse and domestic violence.
She urged the attendees to return to their communities as advocates of peace, protectors of the vulnerable, and mentors for the youth.
In his address, Abdullahi Sule, the Governor of Nasarawa State, praised the organisation for selecting a timely and pertinent theme for the conference.
He noted that any nation investing in the education and empowerment of women is directly investing in its own stability and prosperity.
“Justice remains the bedrock of peace, unity, and sustainable development, When trust and accountability are upheld, societies flourish. When they are neglected, confidence in institutions erodes and development suffers,” Governor Sule remarked.
He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to good governance, transparency, and inclusiveness.
The Governor urged citizens to support leadership initiatives by adhering to lawful authority, denouncing corruption, and actively participating in nation-building efforts.
He emphasised that the message of goodness advocated by the conference should resonate with both Muslim and non-Muslim communities worldwide.
Providing a scholarly context for the discussion, renowned academic Professor Muhammad Tanko Baitullah delivered a lecture on the essential nature of leadership in human existence, characterising it as a profound and burdensome responsibility.
Professor Baitullah emphasised that accountability is universal, asserting that political leaders, fathers, and housewives alike are shepherds who will answer for their stewardship before God.
He identified key qualities of effective leadership, including piety, fearlessness, simplicity, compassion, humility, selflessness, and a people-oriented perspective.
Professor Baitullah concluded with a poignant reminder that genuine national reform cannot be imposed externally; it must originate within the hearts of individual citizens and leaders.
