NISO Commences Second Phase of System Operators’ Capacity Development

The Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, has commenced the second phase of its capacity development programme for system operators, as part of efforts to strengthen the safe and reliable operation of the national electricity grid.

Declaring the training open, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NISO, Engineer Abdu Bello Mohammed, said continuous capacity development was necessary to equip system operators to manage the increasing complexities of the power system and respond effectively to changing operational conditions.

He said the responsibilities of system operators require technical competence, sound judgement, discipline, teamwork and commitment to safety.

Mohammed urged participants to deepen their understanding of the Grid Code, describing it as a fundamental standard guiding the responsibilities of system operators.

Also speaking, the Executive Director, System Operations, Engineer Nafisatu Ali, said system operators play a critical role in monitoring, coordinating and managing the national grid for safe, secure and economical electricity delivery.

She identified real-time grid management, coordination of generation and power flows, load allocation, outage management, emergency response and maintenance planning among their responsibilities.

Ali stressed the importance of effective coordination, particularly given the interconnected nature of Nigeria's electricity system.

She also urged participants to strengthen their knowledge of voltage and frequency control, power-flow monitoring, outage management and real-time balancing of generation and load.

The Executive Director, Finance and Corporate Services, Babajide Ibironke, said participants would be expected to share the knowledge acquired with their respective teams in line with NISO's knowledge-sharing policy.

NISO says the programme is part of its broader efforts to develop the human capacity required for the effective management of Nigeria's evolving electricity system.
