Shagari Urges Northern Voters to Back Tinubu’s Re-election Bid
By Maryam Muhammad
Former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State and former Minister of Water Resources, Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, has called on voters in Northern Nigeria to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, citing ongoing infrastructure development, particularly the Kaduna–Abuja dual carriageway, as a key factor in sustaining the administration’s development agenda.
Shagari, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), made the call while reacting to the APC presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna, where he commended the party’s leadership, Northern governors and supporters for mobilising behind the president ahead of the next general election.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Musa Ubandawaki, Shagari described the gathering as a demonstration of the party’s organisational strength and determination to mobilise support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said the turnout of party leaders, stakeholders and grassroots mobilisers from across Northern Nigeria highlighted the region’s significance in the country’s political landscape.
Shagari also congratulated Tinubu on the commissioning of the Kaduna-Abuja dual carriageway, describing it as an important infrastructure project that would improve connectivity, facilitate trade and ease the movement of people and goods.
He said sustained investment in roads and other critical infrastructure was essential to economic growth, job creation and improved business activities, particularly for farmers, traders, transport operators and small-scale enterprises.
“I congratulate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the Kaduna-Abuja road project and the efforts made to improve critical infrastructure across the country.
“A functional road network is essential to economic growth because it facilitates the movement of people, goods and services while reducing the difficulties faced by commuters and businesses,” he said.
The former minister, however, urged the Federal Government to sustain infrastructure development while prioritising security, economic stability, employment generation and social protection.
He stressed that political support must be backed by responsive leadership, transparency, accountability and continuous engagement with citizens to ensure that government policies translate into tangible improvements in their living conditions.
Shagari expressed optimism that a second term for Tinubu would provide an opportunity to consolidate ongoing projects, strengthen reforms and implement additional initiatives to address the country’s economic and social challenges.
He consequently urged Northern voters to support the president in the 2027 election, saying continuity in governance could help sustain ongoing development efforts.
In Sokoto State, Shagari commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for what he described as his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, social welfare, human capital development and policies aimed at improving residents’ living conditions.
