APC Accuses ADC Leadership of Withholding Workers’ Salaries

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has accused the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership of withholding workers’ salaries for more than 12 months, raising concerns over the opposition party’s ability to manage its internal affairs and fulfil its responsibilities to Nigerians.

In a statement issued by the Council's spokesperson, Dele Alake, he alleged that the ADC National Working Committee, chaired by Senator David Mark, with Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as Secretary, had neglected the welfare of its employees despite the party's promises to Nigerians.

“It has come to our attention that the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress, led by Senator David Mark as Chairman and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as Secretary, has refused and neglected to pay party staff for over a year,” the statement read.

“We find it unconscionable that a political party that has made many grandiose promises to hoodwink Nigerians owes its workers for more than 12 months. Owing staff who come to work every day and who rely on the salaries for their daily sustenance is wicked and reprehensible.”

The Campaign Council maintained that the alleged failure to meet salary obligations raised questions about the opposition party's commitment to workers' welfare and its ability to fulfil its political promises.

“With this development, Nigerians can now see the emptiness and insincerity of those parading themselves as ‘new saviours’,” Alake stated.

The Council further criticised the ADC leadership and its presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alleging that their political ambitions were motivated by personal interests rather than national development.

“We have clearly stated that ADC leaders and their presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, do not mean well and can do nothing for our country. Their desperation for power is driven by personal aggrandisement and venomous ill will against President Bola Tinubu,” the statement alleged.

“A party that cannot pay its cleaners and workforce cannot be entrusted with our country's affairs.”

The statement also accused Atiku of having a history of delayed salary payments to employees of his private businesses, including Gotel Communications.

“Atiku Abubakar, the ADC's leader and Presidential candidate, has a reputation for owing his employees. While he regularly junkets to the UAE, staff at his Gotel Communications and other businesses also went months without pay and staged protests over unpaid salaries and other benefits,” Alake said

Turning to the record of former Osun State Governor and ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, the Campaign Council criticised his administration's handling of workers' salaries and pension obligations during his eight years in office.

“The record of the ADC General Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, on paying workers' salaries and pensioners in Osun State, where he was a governor for 8 years, was abysmal,” he said.

“As governor, he mismanaged the state's finances to the point that he could not pay workers. His government thus introduced quarter-salary and, at times, half-salary payments. As for pensioners, he abandoned them for more than four years. Many died because they could not afford the basics of life,” Alake stated.

The Campaign Council argued that the alleged records of the ADC leadership reinforced its concerns about the party's management of workers' welfare.

“We are therefore not surprised that ADC, harbouring birds of the same feather, cannot pay its workers' salaries,” the statement added.

The Council further called on Nigerians to scrutinise the administrative records of political parties and their candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, maintaining that the welfare of employees should be an important measure of leadership responsibility.

“We are sounding a warning to Nigerians and working people now: reject ADC. Reject Atiku Abubakar and reject all ADC candidates in the next general elections. They do not have the interest of our country and our people at heart,” Alake declared.

“A party that aspires to govern Nigeria and which cannot be trusted with something as basic as the management of its own affairs and the welfare of its workforce should be rejected by Nigerians,” Alake stated.
