Kaduna Harmattan: KADCCAM Warns Residents Against Bush Burning

Kaduna Harmattan: KADCCAM Warns Residents Against Bush Burning

By Maryam Muhammad

The Kaduna State Climate Change Accountability Mechanism (KADCCAM) has warned residents against indiscriminate bush burning and other activities that could trigger fire outbreaks as the Harmattan season approaches.

The organisation urged residents, particularly hunters, farmers, traders and households, to adopt preventive measures to safeguard lives, property and the environment during the dry season.

In a statement, KADCCAM Co-Director, Ibrahima Yakubu, said dry vegetation, low humidity and dusty winds associated with Harmattan could create conditions that allow fire to spread rapidly across communities, farmlands, forests and markets.

He advised residents to avoid indiscriminate bush burning, careless disposal of cigarette butts and open-air burning of refuse, while exercising caution when handling cooking equipment, electrical appliances and other potential sources of fire.

Yakubu also urged hunters to desist from setting bushes on fire in the course of their activities, warning that uncontrolled fires could destroy vegetation, threaten wildlife and endanger nearby communities.

He further called on farmers and herders to adopt environmentally friendly land management practices, protect trees and vegetation, and avoid activities that contribute to deforestation, air pollution and land degradation.

The KADCCAM Co-Director also advised households and institutions to inspect electrical connections, switch off unused appliances and provide basic firefighting equipment where possible.

He urged residents to take precautions against Harmattan-related health challenges by reducing exposure to dust, maintaining proper hygiene and protecting vulnerable groups, particularly children, older persons and people with respiratory conditions.

Yakubu emphasised that preventing fire disasters and environmental hazards requires collective responsibility involving government agencies, traditional and religious leaders, community organisations and residents.

He therefore called on the public to promptly report fire outbreaks and other environmental emergencies to the relevant authorities.

The organisation reaffirmed the need for collective action to ensure a safer, cleaner and more climate-resilient Kaduna State.
