Army Day: Rivers Reaffirms Support for Security Agencies

By Ahmad Sirajo Makama, Abuja

The Rivers State Government in southern Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting security agencies operating in the state, pledging sustained assistance to enable them to effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara gave the assurance at the grand finale of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration held at the General Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Addressing military personnel, government officials, traditional rulers and other dignitaries, the governor said his administration would continue to provide the Nigerian Army and other security agencies with the logistics, infrastructure and institutional support required to enhance their operational efficiency and strengthen efforts to maintain peace and security across Rivers State.

He stressed that the success of the military translates directly into the success of government, noting that security remains the foundation upon which economic growth, investment and sustainable development thrive.

Governor Fubara commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism, operational readiness, technological advancement and commitment to manpower development.

He described the military drills, ceremonial parade and other displays during the celebration as evidence of a disciplined and capable force dedicated to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

The governor also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for providing leadership and support that have strengthened the capacity of the military to carry out its constitutional mandate of safeguarding the nation.

Speaking on the significance of Rivers State hosting this year’s Army Day celebration, Fubara said the choice of Port Harcourt underscores the prevailing peace and stability in the state, contrary to what he described as negative narratives and sponsored misinformation aimed at portraying Rivers State in a bad light.

“The choice of Port Harcourt as host of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 signifies peace and normalcy in our state, contrary to negative stories published in some newspapers and circulated on social media,” he said.

Governor Fubara further appealed to the Federal Government and the military high command to prioritise the welfare of officers and soldiers, emphasising that improved welfare, better working conditions and adequate support are critical to boosting morale and ensuring optimal performance.

He reiterated that his administration would continue to work closely with security agencies to sustain peace in Rivers State while fostering an environment conducive to investment, economic prosperity and the well-being of residents.
