Vandals Destroy Five TCN Towers, Threaten Electricity Supply
By Muhammad Bala Imam
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says five transmission towers along the Ikot Abasi–Eket 132kV Double Circuit Transmission Line have collapsed following severe vandalism of critical structural components.
This was disclosed in a statement by the General Manager of Public Affairs of TCN, Ndidi Mbah.
The statement noted that the extensive damage was discovered during a routine joint patrol by its linesmen on August 9, 2026.
According to the company, a preliminary assessment showed that critical structural bracing members had been removed from Towers N9, N10, N11, N12, N13 and N15, leading to the collapse of five towers.
It added that structural members had also been removed and stolen from seven other towers along the same transmission corridor, leaving them structurally compromised and at risk of further collapse.
TCN said “It had reconfigured the network to mitigate the impact on electricity supply, with priority given to supply from Ibom Power.”
The company said its management was mobilising an urgent intervention to reconstruct the affected sections of the transmission line.
TCN added that security agencies had been notified to support investigations and prevent further vandalism along the line route.
The transmission company condemned the incident as an act of sabotage, stressing that it remained committed to maintaining a robust and reliable national electricity grid.
