By Ahmad Sirajo Makama
The Nigerian Navy has rescued the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Trade, Industry and Investment, Dr Ebieri Jones, and six other passengers following a boat mishap in Abedigbene waters, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The incident involved a passenger boat travelling from Yenagoa to Akassa with eight persons on board.
The Navy, through personnel of Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO, carried out the rescue operation in collaboration with local divers and members of Abedigbene Fishing Community following a distress report from a local fisherman.
According to a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, personnel deployed at Labrador Lagosgbene Houseboat promptly mobilised to the scene and commenced search and rescue operations.
Those rescued included Commissioner Jones, an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and five other passengers.
The survivors were taken to the houseboat, where they received first aid, with preliminary assessments indicating that none sustained visible injuries.
However, a police officer who was also on board remains missing, as search and rescue operations continue to locate the officer.
The Navy disclosed that the Commissioner and the six other survivors were conveyed to Yenagoa on Friday, November 6, to reunite with their respective families.
The statement noted that the rescue operation underscores the Nigerian Navy's commitment to maritime safety, protection of lives and prompt response to emergencies within its area of responsibility.
The Commanding Officer, FOB FORMOSO, commended the personnel for their swift response and professionalism, while acknowledging the invaluable contributions of local divers and members of the host community.
The Navy further emphasised the importance of collaboration between security agencies and coastal communities in strengthening maritime safety and protecting lives.
